Si les interactions entre corpuscules sont négligeables, chacun est représenté par une fonction d'onde, fonction complexe des coordonnées et du temps, obéissant à une équation aux dérivées partielles dite équation d'onde. Cette fonction joue le rôle de la «variable lumineuse» ou «amplitude».
